Often seen as a TikTok clone, YouTube Shorts feature short-form videos with a duration of up to 3 minutes. The authors of the videos get paid based on the number of views or via Google ads.
Meaning and history
In an attempt to compete with TikTok, the online video-sharing service YouTube released a platform for short clips in 2019. Initially, videos could only last 30 seconds. Then, the time was extended to 1 minute, and eventually, in the fall of 2024, to 3 minutes.
The beta was introduced in India in 2020, shortly after TikTok was banned in the country. In March 2021, it debuted in the U.S. In July of the same year, it was released globally. By May 2024, the number of views exceeded 5 trillion.
What is YouTube Shorts?
YouTube Shorts is YouTube’s response to the video craze started by TikTok and imitated by Instagram. In the YouTube version, vertical videos last up to 180 seconds and feature several interactive elements.
2020 – present
While the YouTube Shorts logo is based on the parent platform’s brand identity, it also has a unique touch. The original “play” button from the YouTube logo was redrawn in a casual and creative way.
Font and color
The typeface used for the word “YouTube” is the same as in the parent platform’s logotype. It’s a custom font designed by Sorkin Type Co. In the full version, the word “Shorts” is given in a lighter typeface, but in the shortened version, the type is bold.
The color scheme of the YouTube Shorts logo is inspired by the iconic combination of red and black, which has been a hallmark of the YouTube brand identity since its inception in 2005.
