The Ghostemane moniker belongs to musician and record producer Eric Whitney. In addition to creating music under his main moniker, he has also released records as Eric Ghoste, Baader-Meinhof (a heavy metal project), GASM (a noise music project), and Swearr (an electronic music project).
Eric Whitney was born on April 15, 1991, and spent his early years in West Palm Beach, Florida. Hardcore punk music is mentioned as the first genre he developed an interest in. Eric began playing the guitar and performed in the hardcore punk band Nemesis, among other bands, as a teenager. Before he started his professional path in music, Eric worked in B2B sales.
Ghostemane’s works focus on topics such as occultism, depression, nihilism, life and death, as well as Illuminism.
What is Ghostemane?
Ghostemane (Eric Ghoste) is a moniker of rapper and record producer Eric Whitney. His “genre-destroying” music mixes elements of trap, rap, rock, industrial, and heavy metal.
The black and white figure featured in the primary Ghostemane logo can be described as an anthropomorphic thistle or a human with a cactus for a head. The description, though, doesn’t convey the cool, instantly recognizable, and memorable style of this design.
The updated logo, released the same year as the Hexada studio album, showcased the artist’s name in a unique typography that doesn’t belong to a specific style but is instead a blend of various elements. There’s something gothic, and something botanical, and also the ends of glyphs are vaguely reminiscent of a lightning bolt. To sum up, that’s a perfect implementation of the genre-destroying theme, which is characteristic of Eric Ghoste.
The word “spidery” immediately comes to mind when you see this wordmark. It does look like a huge black hairy spider due to the extended glyphs and multiple “hairs”. But elements of the design also bear an uncanny resemblance to old dry bushes. Additionally, the “hairs” may be interpreted as dripping blood or some other sinister black liquid.
The design effectively combines Gothic and tech elements. While this logo bears no resemblance to its predecessors, it shares their genre-defying approach. Another similarity to the previous versions is the legibility issue, which has haunted the otherwise cool designs.
Black, white, and their mixtures have comprised the palette of the Ghostemane logo so far. Some versions are lighter, others are dominated by black, but they’ve never relied on other colors. The typography, by contrast, has been utterly different in each version.
