Meaning and history

Kids’ WB! Logo history

Kids’ WB! was launched by the in-house Warner Bros. team as a Saturday-morning programming block for kids, which aired both new and old animations, created by the studio. Apart from Saturday mornings, the block was also broadcast on the afternoons throughout the week.

The program block has aired dozens of Warner Bros. animated masterpieces over the years, including Tiny Toon Adventures, Teen Titans, Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!, Tom and Jerry Tales, Coconut Fred’s Fruit Salad Island, and many more. Also, Kids’ WB! holds the interesting record of being the longest-running Saturday morning program in the history of television!

In terms of visual identity, Kids’ WB! was bright and super friendly, perfectly depicting the essence of the animation block and creating a cool, full-of-energy image, which aimed to brighten up Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons for kids.

1995 – 1997

The original Kids’ WB! logo was designed in 1995 and stayed unchanged for the first two years of the programming block history. It was a lightweight composition, based on the iconic Warner Bros. circular crest. Here it was contoured in yellow and purple, and slightly slanted to the left, creating a playful mood. The purple outline of the “W” was supported by the solid purple vertical bar of the exclamation mark, while the dot was contoured in red, balancing the solid red “Kids’” wordmark, written at the bottom left part of the banner.

1997 – 2008

The redesign of 1997 added intensity and stability to The Kids’ WB! visual identity. The light-contoured elements were redrawn in solid shades, with volume and gradients added to the concept. The WB abbreviation was set in white with thick outlines, and the “Kids’” was rewritten in the same style. This badge stayed active till the closure of the programming block in the middle of 2008.

Font and color

The bold uppercase lettering from the last Kids’ WB! logo, introduced in 1997, was executed in a custom geometric sans-serif typeface, Lithos, with distinctive contours and straight cuts of the bars.

As for the color palette of the Kids’ WB! visual identity, it was based on the contrasting combination of purple, red, yellow, and white, which stood for the friendliness, playfulness, and variety of animation content.
