An Origin is a software developer in 2011 as a video-games purchasing and playing platform. Today the program is available in almost 20 languages and has its versions both for computers and mobile phones. The platform has over 50 million users worldwide.
Meaning and history
In early 2025, Electronic Arts Publishing officially announced that the EA Origin app, launched in 2011, will stop working as early as April 17, 2025. And users of the app will have to switch to a new one called EA App. But what exactly is Origin, and how did it manage to survive for so long?
Origin is an application from Electronic Arts, which allows easy and convenient communication between players who use the company’s games. The app allows you to play multiplayer with your friends while communicating with them from any distance; all you need is a stable internet connection, an installed Origin app, and a purchased game from Electronic Arts.
The Origin app was developed by Electronic Arts specifically to support games released by the company, the main part of this program is the service provided to the player who bought a game from EA. The project was supposedly launched as an alternative to Steam, but unfortunately, Electronic Arts never managed to beat the main competitor.
2011 – 2022 (Windows), 2013 – present (macOS)
The Origin logo is composed of a wordmark with a recognizable emblem on its left. The software’s visual identity looks strong and professional.
The nameplate in classic gray is executed in a bold sans-serif typeface with smooth lines and elongated and sharp upper tail of the letter “g”, which balanced the emblem.
The “Powered by EA” tagline is written in the same color, but in a thinner and stricter sans-serif font, leaving enough space between the letter and making the logo look lighter.
2020 (beta)
In 2020 for the Beta version of the soft the logo was modernized and redrawn in a new color palette with the fluorescent coral shade as the main one. The emblem kept its contours (just the negative space got wider), while the lettering was significantly changed: it was rewritten in the uppercase of a stable geometric sans-serif typeface, with the rail of the capital “G” looking like a strict arrow.
2020 – 2022 (beta), 2022 – 2023 (Windows)
The official redesign of 2020 has introduced a new version of the Origin visual identity. The concept was completely rethought and now the logo featured a combination of a solid red roundel with the stylized “EA” monogram written across it in sharp black bars of a significant thickness and with diagonal cuts of the ends. This version of the logo stayed active for just several months.
2023 – present (Windows), 2024 – present (macOS)
The redesign of 2023 has worked with the background of the badge, adding orange and yellow gradients to it, while keeping the style of the “EA” monogram unchanged. In the new color scheme, the logo started looking more confident and professional, at the same time reflecting the progressive approach of the brand and its creativity.
Emblem
The Origin emblem is a stylized letter “O”, which is extra-bold and has sharp tails coming out of it on its top and bottom parts, creating a shuriken-like figure, which evokes a sense of dynamics and strength.
The gray and orange color palette of the Origin logo is a reflection of a progressive and creative brand, which also evokes a sense of trust and authority.
The Origin logo is simple and minimalist, yet looks sharp and contemporary due to its thick lines and pointed elements.
