One Love Foundation is an organization established to raise awareness about a wide range of issues connected with relationship violence. Its target audience is young people, and its main tools are films and conversations. According to the official website, over 3.2 million people have participated in workshops, and over 53 thousand volunteers and educators have been trained to hold such workshops.
Meaning and history
The starting point was the murder of Yeardley Love in Charlottesville, Virginia, who was a lacrosse student-athlete at the University of Virginia. The person who was arrested for the murder was UVA men’s lacrosse player George Wesley Huguely V, whom Yeardley had been dating for two years. He was found guilty and got a 23-year prison sentence. Just months after the murder, Yeardley’s family created the One Love Foundation.
What is One Love?
One Love Foundation educates young people about healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors, as well as ways of preventing domestic violence. It was founded in 2010 and named in honor of Yeardley Love, who had been murdered by her boyfriend.
2010 – present
The One Love logo showcases a stylized depiction of a human heart. It’s built symmetrically. The lines forming the heart are positioned in such a way that they can be interpreted as two hands. The symmetry axis is emphasized by the central letter “l.”
Font and Color
The choice of color in the One Love logo might seem surprising—it would have been natural to use red for a heart icon. Yet, come to think of it, the blue color is better at conveying the foundation’s aim. Blue is associated with thinking, mental activity, and the power of the human mind. So, choosing this color for the heart can be a way to emphasize that it takes some thinking to have a healthy relationship and recognize the signs of unhealthy relationships.
The letters of the typeface perfectly fit the style of the heart emblem. The most distinctive glyph is the “l,” which has the same shape as the number “1,” thus referencing the organization’s name.
