The Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulates and develops workplace safety and health standards. Its goal is to reduce workplace injuries, illnesses, and other incidents. Besides establishing standards, the agency offers free resources and training programs to foster safer work environments across the country. The majority of the standards pertain to private businesses, although some public sector employees in states without their own OSHA-approved programs are also covered.

Meaning and History

President Richard Nixon signed the OSHA into law in 1970. An increased number of workplace accidents and fatalities that required federal intervention was the key reason for its formation. As new challenges appeared, the organization added new regulations and standards. There are over 1000 standards that cover all the possible cases and scenarios. A significant drop in workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities in the country showed that the organization’s formation was reasonable and showed its effectiveness.

OSHA Logo

The logo consists of two elements – the abbreviated name and a stylized “O”. The name is done in black using a bracketed slab serif font that features high stroke contrast. All the characters are closely spaced, which creates a strong image. The first letter in the acronym is formed from four overlapping circles that get smaller and smaller. The bottom one is black to match the rest of the lettering. On top of it, there are blue, then gray and white circles with a thin white outline, which creates more depth. The circles overlap in such a way that they appear as moons rather than circles. The colors were chosen to emphasize protection, safety, and regulatory oversight in the workplace.

Font and Color

The colors used in the logo are black, blue, gray, and white. The black color is used toconvey a sense of authority and professionalism. Meanwhile, the blue creates a sense of trust and freedom. The gray stands for neutrality, balance, fairness, and impartiality, while the white represents honesty and perfection.
For the inscription, the organization chose a classic, bold font with bracketed slab serifs and a combination of strong strokes with contrasting thinner ones. This created a formal, authoritative, and professional image. The font is similar to the Sabon Next Pro Bold font and the Amariya Heavy font.
