Hezbollah, also sometimes spelled as Hizbollah, is an Iran-backed Shiite Islamist group. Despite being listed as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the United States and the European Union, Hezbollah remains popular in Lebanon. It is deeply ingrained in Lebanese politics and society, largely because of its extensive social services. The latter include welfare institutions, schools, and hospitals. Its special forces are often called the best in the world and there is a rumor that they have sneaked into the Israeli army.
Meaning and History
Hezbollah was founded in 1982 during the chaos caused by the civil war in Lebanon that lasted 15 years and ended only in 1990. It was during the second time Israeli troops invaded 2southern Lebanon to expel Palestinian militias that were using the region as a base from which to attack Israel. A group of Shiite Muslims chose to fight the Israeli forces. Meanwhile, Iran decided to seize the opportunity to influence the Arab world and began funding the militias created in Lebanon. Soon after its foundation, the group presented its main goals: expelling Western colonialists from Lebanon, destroying the state of Israel, and joining Iran. Over time, Hezbollah’s goals have softened somewhat. Its name means “Party of God”.
