A Check Mark is a special symbol that is represented by two dashes forming an acute angle to the bottom and is often used to describe confirmation of something. This symbol can also be found in the design of lists, to indicate accounting, or as a mark of a correct answer. In some popular social networks, the Check Mark is also used to mark the pages of popular personalities or companies.
Meaning and history
Despite the fact that today Check Mark is often associated with social networks and messengers, i.e. it is a modern symbol, its origin dates back to the times of the Roman Empire, which makes it one of the oldest punctuation marks.
Initially, the Latin letter “V” denoted the word “Veritas”, which literally translates as “truth”. Roman chroniclers used this symbol to mark “true” or “read” or “approved” at the end of documents. Since the existing at that time writing utensils at the fast writing process began to write not immediately, the length of the left side of the tick was shorter. It is in this form that the corresponding sign has survived to our days.
It will probably come as a surprise to many, but it is believed that the check mark is the basis for almost all major punctuation marks, such as commas, semicolons, question marks, quotation marks, and parentheses. If you look closely, the inverted check mark symbol does resemble a comma, although there is no documentary evidence of this, of course.
Use of a Check Mark
A check mark is a symbol that is often used to indicate “true” or “correct”. Thanks to this mark, you can easily mark the completion of a certain task or step. This icon is often seen in various lists, checklists, or highlighting thoughts, intentions, etc.
We tick the right answers in tests, mark the candidate we like on ballot papers, and even rubricize text. And also this symbol has taken root in advertising and in the design of logos of many large companies.
Check Mark in Different Languages
For most of us, a checkmark in a text serves as a confirmation of the correctness of an answer, a check mark, or the completion of an action. However, in some countries, this is not the case.
In Sweden, Finland, and Norway, as well as in South Korea and Japan, a tick marks mistakes and disagreement with what has been written, i.e. it has a completely opposite meaning. For example, in Swedish schools, a tick marks wrong answers, while correct answers are marked with the letter R.
Check Mark in Social Media
Of course, the basic meaning of the checkmark we have discussed above, but today, when everyone has profiles on social networks and various messengers, we can not neglect the new “functionality” of this symbol. Thus, the blue or green checkmark is a symbol of verification of the user’s profile on various platforms.
It is trying to get many companies, because today this small icon can raise the level of respect for the company and tell a lot about its reputation. The checkmark is one of the symbols that the brand can be trusted. The presence of a checkmark next to the name of the user profile indicates that the person or company has passed the verification process, and the data on the page really belongs to it. By the way, Twitter was the first platform to introduce the technology of profile verification and “checkmark distribution”, and then the other social networking giants joined in.
