The primary Gonzaga Bulldogs logo can be broken down into two parts: the bulldog and the lettering. We should point out, though, that the bulldog head is also used as a standalone logo.

Meaning and history

Gonzaga Bulldogs Logo history

The athletic program’s primary logo in its current form was introduced in 1998. The emblem features the side view of a bulldog’s head. The muzzle looks cruel and menacing. It appears that the dog is furious and ready to attack – an absolutely desirable effect when it comes to sports logotypes.

To reinforce the emotional impact, the designer who created the emblem depicted a collar with sharp red spikes. The fact that the collar is red – the color of passion and aggression – works towards the same aim.

The wordmark emblem placed below the bulldog head consists of the words “Gongaza University” given in two lines. Each of the words is given in a different type and color. The word “Gongaza” is larger and italicized. It’s white with a blue and red outline. The word “University,” which is positioned below, is blue.

1998 – 2004

The first Gonganza Bulldogs logo, which became the basis for all the following versions, was introduced in 1998 and stayed untouched for about six years. It was a light gray image of a bulldog’s profile, placed above the two-leveled lettering, with the enlarged “Gonganza”‘outlined in blue and red, and a solid blue “University” in the capitals of a smaller size. This bottom line worked as the badge’s stabilizer and strengthener.

2004 – 2011

The redesign of 2004 has darkened the shades of gray and blue in the Gonganza Bulldogs badge, creating a more brutal and powerful image. As for the logo in general, it has kept all the elements in their places and didn’t touch anything apart from the two colors. This version of the badge stayed in use by the teams of the program for several years.

2011 – Today

In 2011 the color palette of the Gonganza Bulldogs logo got darkened up one more time. Dark blue became navy, bright red turned intense scarlet, and gray was made deeper and at the same time smoother. The contours of the graphical part and the lettering remained the same, but the new shades made the badge look more professional and powerful.

Basketball

The university has been especially proud of its men’s basketball team as it has been considered the most successful of its programs. For more than 15 years, the team’s home arena has been the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Bulldogs have competed in 16 consecutive NCAA tournaments. Moreover, in the 2012–13 season, they reached the #1 ranking in both major polls.

Football

During World War II, Gonzaga University canceled its football team, as many colleges did at the time. However, unlike most of them, the school decided not to resume it. The last game the Bulldogs football team played took place in 1941.

The list of head coaches included Gus Dorais, Matty Mathews, Clipper Smith, and Puggy Hunton, to name just a few.

Baseball

The baseball team is part of the West Coast Conference. It was fielded in 1890 and plays its home games at the on-campus Washington Trust Field and Patterson Baseball Complex. The list of the team’s achievements includes winning four conference championship series and five regular-season division titles. The team is coached by Mark Machtolf.
