Butler Bulldogs is the name of an athletic program from Butler University, a private educational institution, which was established in 1855, and is based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The program of the university is composed of twenty men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Meaning and history
Apart from playing in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, since 2013 the Butler Bulldogs teams are all members of the Big East Conference, which is an intercollegiate athletic organization, established in 2013, and consisting of 11 college members, covering 22 sports disciplines. Before joining the Big East, the athletic program of Butler University was a part of the Horizon League and the Atlantic 10 Conference, but just for one season.
What is Butler Bulldogs?
Butler Bulldogs is the collegiate athletic program of Butler University, which consists of 9 men’s and 11 women’s teams, competing in various sports disciplines, including Cross Country, Baseball, Basketball, indoor and outdoor Track and Field, Lacrosse, and a few others.
In terms of visual identity, the Butler Bulldogs athletic program has been quite constant since the beginning of the 1990s. The main element of the logo hasn’t changed much since then, being only refined and enlarged, with a slight alternation of its color palette. The central symbol of the last two logos of Butler Bulldogs is the drawing of its mascot, which appeared by accident.
1969 – 1985
The original logo of Butler Bulldogs was designed in 1969 and featured a solid navy-blue roundel in a delicate white and blue outline, with a white image of a bulldog face, drawn in solid white soft strokes. The portrait of the dog was accompanied by a white arched lettering, written on top of the roundel in the uppercase of a clean and simple geometric sans-serif typeface.
1985 – 1990
The redesign of 1985 has introduced a reworked version of the Butler Bulldogs logo, with the full silhouette of a bulldog outline in blue and placed against a plain white background above the bold blue lettering written in the uppercase of a geometric serif typeface with stable shapes and square cuts of the bars.
1990 – 2008
The Butler Bulldogs logo, designed in 1990, featured a combination of a graphical emblem, and a logotype placed under it. It was a fresh and clean composition, executed in a calm blue and white color palette, with the drawing of the billfold head in white set on a solid blue circle, and underlined by a bold blue logotype in all capitals.
2008 – 2015
The redesign of 2008 was a minor one, with just the color palette of the Butler Bulldogs visual identity refined. The shade of blue, the background of the roundel was painted with, got darkened up, coming back to the navy-blue from the very first emblem of the athletic program. In the new color scheme, the circular medallion with a white bulldog head on it started looking more brutal and powerful.
2015 – 2019
The redesign of 2015 kept the main element untouched but simplified the composition of the logo. Now the Butler Bulldogs badge features the same drawing with the bulldog’s head, but executed in a darker blue, white, and gray color palette, and outlined in all three colors, with blue — being the boldest. The drawing is now set directly in a transparent background, with no circular medallions or framings. The lettering was fully removed from the badge as well.
2019 – Today
In 2019 the black contouring of the bulldog head turned navy blue, while the gray accents gained a slightly blueish hue, creating a colder and smoother image. Overall, the badge with the head of the bulldog has kept all the strokes and lines in their places, without any visible changes.
