The Binghamton Bearcats is the name of the athletic program of Binghamton University based in Binghamton, New York.
Meaning and history
Binghamton University, established in 1946, was mentioned as “one of the new potential Ivy League members” by Forbes magazine not that long ago. This public education institution is considered one of the most prestigious universities in the country and has its confident place in the top 5 percent of the best educational institutions in the world.
Binghamton provides a top-notch education through six schools and 130-plus academic programs, as well as several exclusive honors programs and world-class research opportunities for students of all majors. Apart from its academic facilities and opportunities, the university boasts a strong athletic program, called the Binghamton Bearcats.
The athletic program of Binghamton University is composed of 21 men’s and women’s teams, members of the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which compete in various sports disciplines, including Baseball, Basketball, Lacrosse, Golf, Ice Hockey, and many more.
1999 – 2014
The old Binghamton Bearcats logo (since 1999) depicts the Bearcat, who has been the university’s mascot since May 1999. The reason why the school chose a new mascot was that it reclassified to NCAA Division I.
The dominant color for all the Binghamton University communications materials is deep green (PMS 342). In the Binghamton Bearcats logo, it’s enriched with several other colors, including grey, red, light green, two shades of grey, black, and white.
2014 – Today
The redesign of 2014 played with the levels of the lettering on the banner of the Binghamton Bearcats logo. The graphical part remained absolutely untouched, while the bottom area of the badge got some significant changes. Now the top level was taken by the large white “Binghamton” in the same style as the “Bearcats” were written before. The silver plate with the “University” moved to the middle level, with the borders cuts diagonally sharp, and the bright green “Bearcats” was now set along the bottom black line of the banner.
Basketball
The men’s basketball team was involved in a scandal, which damaged both its reputation and performance. It turned out the university had compromised admissions and educational standards in an attempt to get better players for their men’s basketball team. As a result of the scandal, the team lost several players and staffers. Since then, the team has never managed to accrue a winning record in overall or conference play.
As for the women’s basketball team, it has never appeared in Division I Tournament, but it competed in the Division III Tournament from 1995 to 1998 and Division II in 1999.
