Meaning and history

Alabama A&M Bulldogs Logo history

Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University was established in the middle of the 1870s, yet its present name was adopted by the public educational institution only in the middle of the 1960s, and this is also when the athletic program of the university, named Alabama A&M Bulldogs was formed.

Today Alabama A&M Bulldogs is composed of 17 men’s and women’s teams, which represent their university in such sports disciplines as Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Track and Field, and several more. The strongest teams of the program are Baseball and Basketball one, with the first winning the championship in 1993, and the second — in 2005.

The Bulldogs compete in the first Division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, yet always stay in the middle of the standings, showing themselves as stable and confident competitors.

1972 – 2002

Alabama A&M Bulldogs Logo 1972

The first Alabama A&M Bulldogs logo, which was adopted in 1972, features the initials of the name of the university. On the forefront, the letter “A” can be seen. In the white triangle inside the large “A,” a smaller “A” is placed. The white field below the horizontal bar of the large “A” houses the letter “M.” Eventually, on the background, you can see the letter “U.”

Most of the serifs are rounded, and as a result, the logo adopts a smooth curvy theme. Due to this, it doesn’t look rigid or official in spite of the fact that it’s a purely typographic logo.

And yet, if we compare it to the school’s secondary logo depicting a bulldog, we’ll immediately feel the latter has more life and emotions to it.

2002 – Today

The redesign of 2002 has kept the idea and structure of the original logo, and only worked with the color palette, bringing in a lighter and brighter shade of burgundy, which has made the whole badge look more eye-catching and energetic. Due to its interesting geometry yet quite a simple idea, the logo of the Alabama A&M Bulldogs program stands out in the list of its competitors.

Football

The team competing in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision was founded in 1912.
