Little Debbie is a well-known American brand of cookies owned by the family-owned McKee Foods Corporation. The company’s story began back in 1934 with the sale of cookies from the trunk of a car. Today Little Debbie is one of the most popular brands in its segment not only in the United States but worldwide.

And it’s another success story, fully fitting to describe such a term as “The American Dream”.

The story of the popular Little Debbie brand began in the United States during the Great Depression, when a man named O. D. McKee started selling brownies out of the back seat of his Whippet car, just to feed his family, consisting of his wife Ruth and three children. The 5-cent cakes sold quite well and it fueled McKee’s interest in baking. So, in 1934, the couple decided to buy a small bakery, naming the new business McKee Foods Corporation.

The first years in the new business were very difficult for the McKee family. They even had to move into the bakery, separating the commercial space from the living space with a simple sheet. However, the couple managed to overcome all the difficulties and create a great brand. In 1960, the McKees decided to create new packaging for their cakes, but could not come up with a catchy and appealing name. The idea came when the couple came across a picture of their four-year-old granddaughter Debbie wearing a cowgirl hat. That’s how “Little Debbie” was born.

To adapt the photo for the new brand’s logo, the company hired artist Pearl Mann, who designed the original illustration for the cardboard box. In the logo, the girl looks older than her actual age. Since then, the logo has only been updated twice, in 1983 and 2013. Incidentally, the girl who became the face of the brand, Debbie McKee-Fowler, has grown up and continues to work in the family business.

Today, the Little Debbie brand is nationally recognized in 50 states and is also very popular internationally. The popularity of the brand can only be judged by the fact that since 1993, Mattel has repeatedly released a series of Barbie dolls in the image of Little Debbie. A total of 5 dolls have been released in the line. All of them are blonde and in white and blue outfits.

1960 – 1984

The original Little Debbie logo, designed by Pearl Mann in 1960, featured a beautiful drawing of a smiling curly girl in a white straw hat, set against a white background and enclosed into a red rectangular frame with softened corners. Under the portrait, a solid red bow-tie-shaped banner with the white serif wordmark was placed and accompanied by the stable and modest black uppercase “Snack Cakes” tagline.

1983 – 2013

The redesign of 1983 has brightened up the shades of Debbie’s portrait and placed it inside an oval frame with a double red outline. As for the lettering part, it was rewritten in a more professional serif font with the title case character set in one straight line. The red banner grew larger and gained voluminous contouring, making it look three-dimensional. As for the black tagline from the previous version, it was removed from the composition.

2013 – Today

Another redesign of the Little Debbie visual identity was held by the company in 2013. The portrait remained almost the same, with just the pattern on the blue and white girl’s shirt slightly modified. The emblem is now drawn against a white background without any framing, and accompanied by a wide glossy red ribbon waving at the bottom of the badge. The white lettering was rewritten in a bolder and more distinctive serif font with the thin black shadowing added.

The classy white lettering from the primary logo of the Little Debbie brand is executed in a sharp and chic serif typeface, which looks pretty close to such commercial fonts as Plantin Bold or Linotype Bengali Black, two elegant types from Monotype foundry.

As for the color palette of the Little Debbie visual identity, it is based on the combination of white, blue, and red shades, with the addition of brownish beige hues of the girl’s skin. The blue-and-red scheme is one of the most popular choices for large brands, and in the case of Little Debbie, it also repeats the colors of the National flag of the United States.
