Allen Edmonds is a brand of American footwear manufacturer, which was founded in 1922 and today has almost 100 retail stores across the country. The company has its production facilities in the USA and Italy and is considered to be a high-end fashion brand.
Meaning and history
Allen Edmonds was founded by American Elbert Ellen in 1922 in the town of Belgium, Wisconsin, and was originally called Allen-Spiegel Shoe Company. The name change to what it is today occurred in 1925 when Bill Edmonds joined the Allen business. And if Allen was directly responsible for the design and production of shoes, Edmonds took over the administrative and organizational functions.
The main idea of the new company was to create more comfortable shoes, because until now in America shoes were made with metal strips and nails, which greatly weighed them down. Allen Edmonds refused nails on the soles and unnecessary details, while the models were no less durable and looked much neater. All shoes of Allen Edmonds brand were produced by Goodyear Welted technology, in which the sole is not sewn immediately to the upper part of the shoe, and between them, there is a strip of leather or rant.
The owners of the company immediately relied on the highest quality materials and specialists who were considered the best in their business. The company’s philosophy becomes loyalty to the traditions of the American Midwest: respect for manual labor, attention to customers, and preservation of ancestral heritage.
Thanks to its focus on the production of quality footwear, Allen Edmonds managed to survive the Great Depression and World War II, during which the company began to produce shoes for the military. By the way, it became one of the key factors of popularity of the brand in the future, because demobilized military remembered the quality of Allen Edmonds and subsequently bought these shoes. So Allen Edmonds became one of the most popular shoe brands in the United States.
Today Allen Edmonds is a company producing men’s shoes, clothing, and accessories, the main specialization of which is still classic shoes. The brand’s products have been chosen by famous and influential people for decades. For example, American presidents Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan, father and son Bush wore shoes of this company at their inauguration.
1922 – ????
The original logo of the Allen Edmonds brand featured bold and stylish lettering as the only element. The inscription was written in thick black bars against a plain white background and had no additional elements. The wordmark was executed in a custom handwritten cursive font with narrowed contours of the title case characters.
???? – Today
The Allen Edmonds visual identity didn’t have many changes throughout the brand’s history, yet the last redesign of 2018 brought a new corporate image and removed the famous timeless logo with a shield emblem.
The modern custom serif typeface of the lettering boasts bold lines and thin white spaces in the letters, making them open and creating a lightweight and contemporary feeling.
The black and white color palette of the Allen Edmonds logo is elegant and timeless and has always been the main brand’s combination. However, with the new typeface, the monochrome palette looks more stylish and strong, than it was with the previous version of the logo.
