NEFF is a German brand of kitchen appliance manufacturer, which was established in 1977 in Bretten. The company is known for its luxury product design and exceptional quality. The brand was acquired by BSH Hausgerate in 1982.
Meaning and history
The full name of the company is Constructa-Neff Vertriebs-GmbH, but it’s stylized as just “Neff” on the logo. While the design has gone through several modifications, it’s easy to spot a recurrent symbol shaped like the Greek letter “Omega.” On the symbolic level, it was apparently inspired by one of the icons you can see on kitchen appliances or by the shape of the appliances themselves.
1919 – 1930
While the company has a long history going back to 1877, its first logos haven’t been preserved. The one introduced in 1919 has a stylish old school look. It’s not a real Gothic script, but there are a lot of small details that bring to mind Old English or German manuscripts. The wordmark features the name of the company founder, Carl Neff, paired with the name of the German city where it was established, Bretten.
1930 – 1941
The design went through a complete overhaul. It now looked far more professional and suitable for a large manufacturer. Only the word “Neff” was left. It was given in capital letters. The glyphs were bold and heavy, symbolizing the reliability of the appliances manufactured by Neff. The word was placed inside a red rectangle.
1941 – 1952
This is when the iconic Omega logo was introduced. Inside the circular part of the letter, you could see a capitalized “N” in a sans serif typeface. Below, the name of the brand could be seen. To create a finished touch, a horizontal bar was placed under the wordmark.
1952 – 1957
You can come across a version where the logo is part of a larger composition featuring an inscription in a custom handwritten typeface. Handwritten typefaces create a warm and personal touch – the effect used by many companies, whose products in one way or another relate to food and the kitchen.
1957 – 2023
The Neff visual identity is solid and strong. Composed of a wordmark with a delicate symbol it looks elegant despite the thickness of its letters.
The Neff nameplate in all the capitals is executed in an extra-bold sans-serif typeface, where only one vertical bar of each letter is thick, in the case with “N” it is the diagonal one.
The brand’s emblem, a circle with a horizontal line on its bottom. The symbol is placed around the letter “N” and in the first versions of the Neff visual identity, it was just something abstract.
However, with the last redesign, the symbol became open at its lowest point. Now it is an Omega, the last letter of the Greek alphabet.
The calm burgundy and white color palette of the Neff logo is elegant and timeless. It shows the brand as a high-end one, with expertise in design and quality.
Some versions of the Neff logo also have a tagline “Cooking Passion Since 1877” written in thin all capitals, it’s placed on a dark gray slim rectangle under the main wordmark. The gray color balances the Neff logo, adding a sense of harmony and sophistication.
2023 – Today
While the current logo borrows much from the previous one, it has a more minimalistic vibe. That’s mostly because the Omega symbol was replaced by an unfinished circle. The figure is perfectly merged with the wordmark. As a result, there’s no need to use the letter “N” twice, like in some of the older versions.
Font and Color
The bold and solid Neff logotype is executed in an extra-bold geometric typeface with massive square shapes. The font of the wordmark is very close to such famous font as Linotype Killer Regular, in which every letter is a separate block, able to live on its own, evoking a sense of confidence and power.
The official Neff color palette is composed of two shades — burgundy and white, which together create a strong and elegant contrast, representing high quality, professionalism, and expertise. White adds a sense of loyalty and transparency to a royal burgundy tone, which stands for strength, wisdom, and authority.
Another option of the brand’s color palette is monochrome, which elevated the seriousness and professional qualities of the company to the top.
