Meaning and history

Clarion Logo history

Clarion is one of the few companies with a long history that has managed to preserve the core of its logo virtually intact. That’s partly due to the timeless design of its original wordmark, which has a modern edge and looks contemporary despite having been created over 85 years ago.

The customized typeface of the original wordmark featured distinctive “a,” “r,” and “n.” Each had an unusual asymmetric curve that somehow echoed the roundel emblem. The emblem depicted the way sound waves spread in the air.

The emblem is gone, and there seems to be a couple of slight alterations in the font’s weight. Also, a gray gradient appeared, which creates an impression that the logo is made of metal. Other than that, the wordmark remains highly recognizable.

The palette was updated. Now, it features a shade of blue that is neither bright nor muted. It catches your eye without being too noisy. The shape of the letters is mostly unchanged. The shape of the tops of the glyphs brings to mind a traditional sound wave visualizer.
