Meaning and history

Sony Ericsson Logo history

The history of modifications of the Sony Ericsson logo perfectly represents the evolution of logo design as a whole. Over the last decades, the company has gone a long way from a rather cluttered version to an utterly simple one, featuring only the brand’s name.

What is Sony Ericsson?
Sony Ericsson was a joint venture between Sony and Ericsson that produced mobile phones. It combined Sony’s expertise in consumer electronics with Ericsson’s telecommunications technology. However, the joint venture ended in 2012 and Sony acquired Ericsson’s stake, leading to the establishment of Sony Mobile Communications.

The designers of this logo had a pretty difficult task in front of them. They had to create a single structure incorporating several brand identities. They solved this problem by inserting the building blocks into a larger frame and separating them with lines within the frame.

1994 – 2001

Here, the “GE” badge, referring to General Electric, is gone. This makes the design a lot cleaner as there’s no need for the frame anymore. Ericsson logo remains unchanged but is now given in a light shade of blue with a subtle grayish undertone.

2001 – 2012

The Sony Ericsson logo is futuristic and recognizable. Its space-inspired typeface of the wordmark is accompanied by the famous Liquid Energy symbol.

The brand’s emblem is vibrant and fresh, with its color palette and 3D effect. The sphere is executed in green and silver colors, which resembles of science fiction movies and high technologies.

The Sony Ericsson logo has become iconic in the industry and is considered to be one of the most interesting examples of the logo design in the beginning of XXI century.

2012 – 2021

The parent brand’s name is now used on the company’s products. The fact that it’s simpler and shorter makes it easier to reproduce on various surfaces and in multiple sizes. The lack of color is convenient when you need to adapt the logo to any kind of visual context.

The reason behind the update was that Sony acquired the entire Sony Ericsson Mobile brand in October 2011. So, the parent company was now free to introduce such profound modifications into its visual brand identity and even remove the word “Ericsson” altogether.
