AFC Richmond is the name of a fictional soccer club from the comedy-drama series Ted Lasso, launched on Apple TV in 2020. The series tells the story of a professional coach who moved from Kansas, USA to London and was forced to change his specialty from American football to soccer. It was AFC Richmond that became the new “home” for the American coach with a special approach to team management.
Meaning and history
The Ted Lasso series, launched by the Apple TV streaming service in 2020, is about a simple American college soccer coach who is hired as the manager of the London soccer team AFC Richmond. Despite the fact that this team does not exist in real life, the club turned out to be so realistic that it even has its own recognizable identity, merchandise which is now sold in stores around the world.
The Ted Lasso series officially ended in the spring of 2023 after the release of the third season. The plot of the show came to an end, but after that, the creators of the project and authoritative media reported about a possible continuation or the release of spin-offs. So, in 2024, it became known that the creators of the series began writing the script for the fourth season of Ted Lasso, which will be about the women’s team AFC Richmond.
As for the club itself, AFC Richmond, although it is a fictional franchise, it has a real-life prototype. The fictional AFC Richmond draws its attributes from the legendary English club Crystal Palace, based, like the series team, in South London. Moreover, the series’ Executive Producer and writer, Ted Lasso’s Bill Wrubel, is the nephew of one of Crystal Palace’s owners, with Selhurst Park Stadium acting as Richmond’s home stadium. Also, both teams have the same club colors, red and blue.
In terms of visual identity, AFC Richmond is sleek and classy. Its logo is widely known all over the globe, and the fans of the series can buy clothing and souvenirs with the famous emblem not only on the Internet but also in physical stores.
1897 – Today
According to the series, AFC Richmond was established at the end of the 19th century, with its logo introduced in 1897, and never changed. The badge has the shape of a traditional triangular crest with a flat top and an elegantly pointed bottom part. The solid blue background of the shield is decorated by a thin red internal outline, a narrowed yellow “1897” datemark in the top corners, and a solid yellow ribbon with the name of the club at the bottom. The central part of the badge boasts a white silhouette of a hound dog, which is the club’s mascot.
Font and color
The narrowed uppercase lettering from the AFC Richmond logo is executed in a sophisticated old-style serif terrace, which looks pretty close to such commercial fonts as Magari Regular, Fiona Pro Black, and Bodoni Poster Compressed, with some slight modifications of the characters’ contours.
As for the color palette of the AFC Richmond visual identity, its main shades are navy, white, and red, with small yellow accents, adding energy and joy to the classy and stable composition.
